The adults' side of Hornsey Library shuts at the end of November while its concrete roof is properly repaired, with reopening pencilled for spring 2027. The children's library stays open.

Spring is a season, not a date.

Hornsey Library is to lose its adults' section for the winter so that its roof can be mended properly rather than caught beneath a scaffold deck. Haringey Council says the section will close at the end of November for work to strengthen and repair reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete, known as RAAC, with reopening "currently scheduled" for spring 2027.

The day itself is unsettled. The council's announcement of 22 October has appeared with the start given as Monday 27 November, which is a Friday, and later as Monday 30 November. Anyone planning a last visit should ask the library.

The children's library, the original gallery and the quiet study space stay open. Book returns, public computers and a selection of books for borrowing move elsewhere in the building, and anything else can be reserved from the borough's other eight libraries and collected at Hornsey. The announcement does not give opening hours for the retained areas, or say what happens to events and groups that use the building.

This is the second half of a problem that began in 2024, when RAAC was found in the roof and the library was closed for repairs before it was due to reopen fully that June. In February 2025 the council extended the scaffold deck contract by about £163,000, at about £2,400 a week, and recorded that the permanent fix was still in design. It also noted that keeping Hornsey open mattered partly because Muswell Hill Library was shut.

In March this year the council approved the search for a contractor, after surveys found RAAC in the ceiling and roof of the double-height atrium on the western side. It ruled out doing nothing, saying it could not "responsibly maintain a structurally unsound roof or bear ongoing weekly scaffold hire costs". The decision record names no contractor and gives no detailed timetable.

The reasoning is sound: weekly scaffold hire was never a long-term answer. But spring is a season, not a date, and Hornsey needs a single start day and the hours of what stays open before the doors close. The question for spring is whether "currently scheduled" survives contact with the roof.
