Old Dairy opens three nights, not as a pub

The listed landmark at the bottom of Crouch Hill has been dark since Greene King shut it earlier this year. It comes back to life on Halloween — for one night, then two more.

Three nights between Halloween and Christmas is a gesture, not a pub.

Since 2020 the Old Dairy has been closed, refurbished, reopened and closed again. Now the Grade II-listed landmark at the bottom of Crouch Hill, in N4 on the Haringey side of the Islington boundary, has three dates in the diary — and not one of them is a reopening.

Martin Besserman, who runs the Monkey Business Comedy Club, has booked three pop-up comedy and cabaret nights into the building on 31 October, 28 November and 12 December, under the name Finsbury Park Cabaret. "The Dairy has been closed for the past few weeks, so we're thrilled to be bringing this fantastic space back to life with a series of one-off pop-up nights," he told the comedy trade paper Chortle.

One-off pop-up nights: his words, and worth holding on to. Nobody is claiming the pub is trading again, and no account says whether the doors open at all between the three shows or stay shut except to ticket holders. Times, prices and a booking link have yet to appear anywhere we can find, including on the pub's own Facebook page.

The building is worth the effort. It went up around 1890 as a shop and creamery for the Friern Manor Dairy Farm Company and became a pub only in 1997; the original dairy behind it, on Hanley Road, sits in Islington, while the ornate corner block on Crouch Hill is Haringey's, and Haringey lists it as an event venue. Greene King reopened it in 2023 after a six-figure refurbishment that was reported to create 20 jobs, then closed it again earlier this year.

Three nights between Halloween and Christmas is a gesture, not a pub, and a neighbourhood that has lost its biggest room should take the gesture: a lit landmark beats a dark one, and Besserman is the only person currently doing anything about it. But the real question belongs to the owner rather than the promoter. Nothing on the record says what happens to the Old Dairy after 12 December — whether Greene King intends to trade it again, let it or sell it. That is the question worth putting before the last curtain.
