Antenatal classes near Crouch End: what's free and what to book

If you are expecting a baby in Crouch End, Hornsey or Stroud Green, there is more free antenatal support within a bus ride than most first-time parents realise, and one paid course that runs a few minutes from the Clock Tower. This guide covers antenatal, postnatal and baby first-aid classes for N8 and the streets around it, checked on 7 September 2026.

The rule of thumb for the area: the free courses are booked through a person, the paid one is booked through a website. Ask your midwife early, because nobody will chase you.

Whittington Health antenatal classes — free, ask your midwife

The Whittington's antenatal education is free to its maternity patients. The classes are currently held online, over Microsoft Teams. There is no public booking page and no waiting list you can join yourself: you discuss it with your community midwife, who books you in.

Free and NHS-run, and a screen is a poor substitute for a room of people due the same month, which is the part first-time parents tend to remember. Raise it at an appointment rather than waiting to be offered.

Infant feeding classes at the Whittington — free, Haringey residents only

A separate strand of infant feeding classes runs for Haringey residents, in person at the Whittington Education Centre on the hospital site in Archway. Free, and again booked through your midwife rather than online. Archway is a short ride from Crouch End and Hornsey, and this one happens in a room rather than on a screen.

Bump to Baby — Muswell Hill Family Hub, free, ask your health visitor

Muswell Hill Family Hub, on Hillfield Park, is the closest thing Crouch End, Hornsey and Stroud Green have to a local family hub, and it is not in any of their postcodes: Haringey's other three are in Tottenham and Wood Green.

The hub runs Bump to Baby, a free antenatal group led by the NHS parent-infant psychology service, on Wednesdays from 2pm to 4pm. The current run finishes on 7 October 2026; the next programme starts on Wednesday 11 November. There is no self-service booking page, so ask your health visitor or Haringey's family hubs team a few weeks before November if you want a place.

NCT antenatal course — Crouch End Picturehouse and Union Church, £289

The one course you can book yourself, today, without a referral. NCT's Haringey antenatal course is split between Crouch End Picturehouse on Tottenham Lane and Union Church, both in N8. The current intake starts on Tuesday 8 September 2026 and runs on a pattern of two weekday evenings and a Saturday morning rather than the same slot every week. It costs £289 for up to two people. Further intakes start on 24 October, 14 November and 26 November 2026, at the same venues and the same price.

£289 is a lot of money, and what it buys is not only the teaching: it is a group of people due the same month who live within walking distance of the Clock Tower. That network is the reason NCT courses hold their price, and it is a fair thing to weigh against the cost.

Baby and child first aid

The free child first-aid and lifesaving course run with the Royal Free's ABC Parents programme was held on 18 and 20 August 2026 at the Northumberland Neighbourhood Resource Centre on Park Lane in Tottenham. No further date has been published. If you want first aid before the winter, ask your health visitor or the council's family hubs team whether another session is planned, and widen the search to Islington and Wood Green.

How to choose

If you are due before Christmas, book the NCT course now and ask your midwife about the Whittington classes at your next appointment; they do different jobs and there is no reason not to do both. If you want a room rather than a screen, and money is the constraint, the infant feeding class at Archway and Bump to Baby in Muswell Hill are the two to chase, and both start with a conversation rather than a booking form.

The gap worth naming is first aid: a borough that can put on a free lifesaving course in Tottenham can put one on this side of Wood Green. The paper will ask Haringey's family hubs team in November whether another date is coming, and whether the Whittington's antenatal teaching is going back into a room.
