Health visiting: Hornsey Central Health Centre, Park Road
Where: Level 2, Hornsey Central Health Centre, 151 Park Road, N8 8JD. Who runs it: Whittington Health NHS Trust. Phone: 020 3074 2650. Open: Monday to Friday, 8am to 6.30pm. Ages: 0-5 (the wider service runs 0-19). Cost: free.
This is the base for the team covering this patch, and the number to have in your phone before you need it. Every family in Haringey with a child under five can use the service, which delivers a standard set of five contacts from pregnancy through the toddler years.
One thing to know before you set out: baby weighing here is by appointment, and the service states it is available only if you have a specific concern or query about your baby or child. Do not turn up expecting a queue of buggies and a set of scales. Ring first.
The other NHS building people assume covers this is Crouch End Health Centre at 45 Middle Lane, N8 8PH. It is also Whittington Health, but its listed services are a community simulation hub, district nursing and talking therapies. No health visiting, no baby clinic.
Under 5s Stay and Play: Union Church, Weston Park
Where: Union Church and Community Centre, Weston Park, N8 9PX. When: every Tuesday morning, term time only, running through to November 2026. Cost: free. Ages: under 5. Booking: none, just turn up. Run by: Muswell Hill Family Hub.
The closest thing Crouch End has to a children's centre session, in a hall most parents already know. It does not run during half-terms.
One wrinkle worth knowing: the council's own listing for this session gives two different start times, 10.30am to 12pm in one place and 10am to 11.30am in another. It is a nuisance rather than a disaster: ring first, or aim for half past ten, when both versions of the listing agree you will be welcome.
Under 5s Stay and Play: Priory Park
Where: in front of the cafe, near the playground, Priory Park. When: Tuesdays, 10.30am to 11.30am. Cost: free. Ages: under 5. Booking: none. Run by: Muswell Hill Family Hub.
An outdoor session in the park most N8 parents pass through anyway, and it lands at the same hour as the Union Church one, so pick by weather. Both Tuesday sessions are free, need no booking and want nothing from you but your presence, which makes them the easiest thing a new parent in N8 can do with a Tuesday morning. As with Weston Park, a call to the Family Hubs team before a first visit is worth the trouble.
Muswell Hill Family Hub, Hillfield Park
Where: Hillfield Park, N10 3QJ. Cost: free. Run by: Haringey Council.
The nearest fixed hub building, and the one the two local sessions are run out of. Its own Under 5s Stay and Play is on Thursdays, 1pm to 2.30pm, free and drop-in. It also runs Baby Sensory Play for babies aged 0-9 months, baby massage, and breastfeeding peer support. If you can get to Hillfield Park, it is worth the walk for those sessions alone: this is where the specialist newborn provision sits. Ring the Family Hubs team to check what needs booking.

How to choose
If you want scales and reassurance, the Park Road route is the formal one and it starts with a phone call, not a walk-in. If you want company, a newborn asleep on you and other adults to talk to, a Tuesday morning at Weston Park or Priory Park costs nothing and asks nothing. If you want the fuller menu, sensory play, massage, breastfeeding support, Muswell Hill has it, and the hill is the price.
The arrangement works well enough for a parent with a buggy and a free Tuesday morning. It works less well for anyone who cannot make Tuesdays, and less well again for anyone who simply wants a baby weighed without first deciding they have a concern worth booking an appointment about. The question for the council is whether the two Tuesday sessions are renewed past November, and whether either of them could take a set of scales.
